Some shit disturbers are better than others. Why is it
that some people don't realize that open source is
inherently based on a socialist political philosophy?

However, I also have a (more) serious question.

First, I'm new to Linux. Jan. 4, 2004 was the first day
I saw it.

Second, I've tried a dozen small versions of Linux, and
I've installed five major Linux distributions -- Debian,
Mandrake, SuSE, RedHat and Slackware -- but none can
read my first physical hard drive.

It was formatted FAT32 by Win98SE on 27 Dec 2003.

In BIOS, it's set as the primary drive, with DMA and
32-bit enabled.

Twice I've opened the case and confirmed that the
jumper is set for master, and that the cable from
the drive to the IDE controller is the one stamped
"master" on the cable. Once I replaced the cable
with a new one from the package.

Here's the info from dmesg:

Here's the info from hdparm -i /dev/hda:

/dev/hda:

Following a suggestion on another list, I tried turning
off DMA with hdparm. Didn't help. Tried turning it off
in BIOS. Didn't help.

I was told that "not 100% native mode" means the
motherboard/IDE controller won't work with Linux,
yet it's working with the second hard drive.

I've been told that the hard drive is defective, yet
a thorough check by Windows Scandisk finds no
errors, no bad sectors.

I've been told the IDE controller is defective, yet
Windows has no problem with it, and Linux has no
problem using it to read/write the second drive.

Win98 and WinXP on my computer read it and use
it. Rescue disks with Win95, WinNT and Win2000
can read it. Linux rescue disks can't read it. Knoppix,
MandrakeMove, SuSE Live, etc., can't read it.

Suggestions?

I have a multi-boot set up, Win98SE on this first
physical hard drive, WinXP, Debian Woody, Mandrake
10 (cooker) on the second hard drive. This isn't a big
deal, but the more I've played with it, the more my
curiosity has grown.

Dick
