AAAargh!
OK, so I finally broke down and bought a wireless router I've been
musing over for awhile, and got a Netgear MR814NA unit for what I
thought was a decent price at the local Office Despot. This is your
average 802.11b 4-port router blah blah blah but Netgear has gotten
a thumbs-up here recently over Linksys, so that's why I bought it.
For whatever reason, I did just check Amazon's price on this unit
and find that they're offering the Netgear MR814 (not NA, apparently
not v2) for $44.94, which is rather cheaper than what I paid.
Moreover, they have a $20 rebate on the product IF you buy it from
an "e-tailer". (Aside: this disgusts me; why should Netgear care if
I bought it in a physical store?)
Now, at that price, I should carry mine directly back to Office
Depot and buy the one on Amazon. However, there is an issue:
The one I bought is apparently the newer unit, and the more I think
about it, the one on Amazon is at such a blow-out price with the
rebate that I get suspicious. The new unit apparently has a few
more bells and whistles (e.g., firewall) and I'm assuming more up to
date firmware. Usenet posts from deja are equivocal on whether the
old one has real issues.
Anybody out there have a better notion about this?
jking
