Well, a $6 per domain price sounds too good to be true. Guess what?
Before you contact networksolutions, contact KSPEI http://www.kspei.com/domains/
(they're a reseller for OpenSRS), they're completely OpenSource and
Linux-friendly, they're local (at least to St. Louis), and their pricing is
$15/year. Send your money to Register.com or Dotster.com or godaddy.com before
you give a nickel to Network Solutions.
Just not wanting to see you throw good money after bad. You've obviously never
tried to transfer a domain with Network Solutions that had *ANY* kind of
customer support interaction.
