In the case of a professor, you have four types of assignments that can be turned in. Textual, oral, presentation, and data. Most classes don't use oral or presentation assignments, and that is why I have little respect for professors who won't take assignments electronically. Every college worth going to has a computer network now, and it doesn't take an awful lot of effort to set up a script where students can submit textual assignments through an online form (I took my class assignments this way from students who missed classes). For data assignments, you set up an SCP service, or have someone who knows how set it up for you (though if you're assigning projects that require data, you really should have the tech savy to set it up yourself.)
