The BBC generally doesn't sell any of its news and has no advertising.
The BBC is funded through the License Fee - a $200 US (ish) fee that
every household in the UK must pay if they own a television set.
In return they provide seven TV stations which have no advertising, 5
analogue UK wide radio stations, scores of local radio stations, 1
global station (the BBC World Service) and a handful of national radio
stations on Digital Radio. The license fee also pays for BBCi
(www.bbc.co.uk) and the BBC News Website (news.bbc.co.uk) which is I
think the most popular news website available on the internet. It's
advertising free and available globally.
BBC services outside the UK - i.e. BBC America etc do have advertising
because folk there don't pay the license fee :)
