I had long been leery of macs but needed a laptop last fall and
considered one, but settled on a Compaq, for price mostly. Hated it.
Damn XP wouldn't run some of my older programs (crashed), didn't like my
wireless setup, and wouldn't find our DV camera w/o all sorts of drivers
and special software. And the thing was heavy. I had it 2 days and took
it back (walmart is good for *some* things).
Bought a powerbook instead.
I have not regretted that decision. I hear scanner support can be
troublesome, but my scanner is hooked to the linux box--not an issue. I
plugged our DV camera into the powerbook and it works great--right now.
No configuring, no drivers to mess with, just turn it on. Plug in a USB
mouse...there it is (I don't like touchpads much, but that's not just a
mac thing).
I've only had 1 app hang once on the powerbook--it was caused by, yes,
Internet Explorer (surprise)! Otherwise, an app has crashed itself once
or twice, but never upset anything else and started right back up. No
reboots, no BSOD, just move on.
I do still need a few Win apps for my work and run win4lin/win98 on the
linux box for that. From the powerbook, which can be as unixy as you
like, I can run an Xsession over ssh and use win4lin remotely. Virtual
windoze being served up by a linux box to a mac :) I just like that in
principle. Works great BTW.
As for running linux on a mac, I don't see a lot of need. Most of the
major linux apps are ported to OS X through the fink project. They all
just run in Xsession windows--they're a little piggy on RAM is all, but
not slow. I run GIMP that way.
I'd say there's no question--go with the mac. As for XP, I wouldn't
touch it with a stick. It *may* be a bit more stable than W98, but it's
bloatware reeking of planned obsolescence for perfectly good hardware.
Besides, W98 is quite stable on win4lin and linux :)
Cheers,
Dave
