Short history, I am almost too old to have had computer classes in
school, when I did I aced them and promptly didn't learn anything more
till 1996 when my daughter brought home the packard bell from wal mart,
had it two weeks and windows wasn't working to my satisfaction so off it
came and went back on modified. That probably happened 10 times at
least and was windows 98 without the price tag when I got through with it.
We have 2 desktops and two laptops, I played computer fairy and gave a
desktop and two laptops to my kids last week and had planned on buying
another super desktop, considered building one but I think I will do
that after I get the taxes done.
I had just about settled on a 2.4 Sony Vaio desktop digital edition for
those of our household who are linux challenged and I decided to look
around a little. I found I could upgrade my trusty emachine which is
only 7 mo old, to a 2.2 ghz processor and put ram in and a new video
card and have a decent computer. (emachine gets good marks on
benchmarks till you get to video). So I have knoppix on everything and
am going to put Suse on my beast (no name computer, makes strange
noises, ordered 512 ram for it from a guy named Jose in Florida who made
the computer, I really don't think Spanish is his native language either
and I'm not being racist). He told me beast shouldn't have windows xp
on it and I reminded him that he built the computer?? He suggested
windows 98, I said I had tried that and drivers etc for his particular
confab were not playing nicely with windows 98.
Last night I'm cruising ebay and bought a thinkpad for another kid. I
saw a snow white apple imac and fell in love. I looked @ the processors
etc and said hey this is goooooooooooood. I didn't get the imac but
wondered if you all had had experience with the mac os and apples. I
don't play intensive games but I want things to WORK. I don't like
freezes or slowdowns or having to reboot or spending all day trying to
figure out why printer won't install. (needed to reset printer bios
settings, duh) I want to surf and send email with the best of em
basically and run an accounting program and a couple graphics programs
if I ever get the time. If things don't work I tend to get obsessive
about them, I think I spent 2 months trying to get windows xp home and
knoppix which was really unstable debian to network happily. I finally
did a vpn and said enough.
So is the mac os really more stable than windoze??? I'm not giving up
on linux but those imacs are pretty and someone said you could install
linux on them too??? And they are actually fairly cheap. Opinions????
Pleeze??
Thanks,
Teresa
