Thanks for the response and the information on the link you sent.
 I am running RH 7.3 with XFree86 Version 4.2.1 (Red Hat Linux release: 
4.2.1-13.73.23)
This M50 has a NVIDIA graphics card.   It looks like things might run 
better with everything
upgraded to  RH9.0 but I am in the middle of a crunch now and I can't be 
without the machine for
a day or two (or more if there are complications in the upgrade). On top 
of that with RH9.0 support gone
I am not sure I want to do it. I was hoping to fix this problem within 
RH7.3 without upgrading everything.

I know there has been a lot of discussion about distributions. I would 
consider buying suse but not until
I have time to really do the upgrade right. (i.e. after I defend my 
dissertation... )

PS. A G5 Mac with MacOS 10 is looking interesting? (Just a jab to see if 
anyone has opinions...)
