Why do you think there is anything important about it? It just happens 
to be the real time as a computer knows it. For none-geek people you 
might show the seconds since the turning from BC to AD on the calendar. 
It's no more or less important than any other way of showing the date 
and time. It's much easier to work with from a programmer's point of 
view though.. for debugging and stuff. You know you've spent to much 
time programming when you get to being able to read epochs as a normal 
clock (actually it's more like reading a sundial).
