As for webmail, why re-invent the wheel?  PHP is a quick install under 
IIS, and then you can use Horde/Imp.  I've set it up many times, and 
have had no problem. It can provide webmail service for any box that 
provides POP or IMAP support.  You could then use the same setup under 
Apache/Linux or OSX when you migrate.

Also, there's no reason why you would be tied to IIS even if you're 
running Windows, unless your CMS actually requires it.  Apache *does* 
exist for other platforms besides Linux...

As for dns aliases, I would do that anyway, even if it's pointing to a 
different virtual server on the same box.  "webmail.xxxxxxx.xxx" is 
pretty much S.O.P. and is a lot easier for users to remember most of the 
time.
