I have to agree, the Red Hat model is nothing new in the enterprise arena. When you're talking about enterprise installations, going with a supported/certified product (that is also supported by an engineer certification process) is a better bet. Safety nets are good things.

However, as a home/hobby user, I can't see investing my time in supporting the RedHat model *at home*. I am lazy, and poor. I don't want to upgrade my machine every year or two, just so I can keep up with patches. Bill's still cranking out patches for Win98.

So, at home, I've made the switch to Debian. They have a proven track record of timely patches, and tools like apt make life easy for lazy admins like me. And Debian *is* GNU, so I have every confidence their distribution model is not changing.

What will be interesting to see is if others follow a similar path...

Does it matter that I'm using a different distro at home? Not likely (and it's arguably a good thing, in that I'll get a better understanding of how Linux really works). But, who knows, it might have an impact down the road. It will be interesting to see how it all turns out.
