Look at Fedora.
Fedora and RedHat are working together to produce their desktop line of
products. It's not supported, primarily b/c RedHat probably isn't
making any money, isn't really selling any quantity, etc. of their
desktop line. Plus, keeping up to date, supporting different products,
etc. etc. etc. isn't worth it to them. SO, they make it completely
user supported, much like other distros.

It's not "supported" by RedHat, but it's essentially the old RedHat
Desktop distribution - you just can't buy support for it.
Aside from that pointer, I'm not going to bother explaing, validating,
pointing out how it's still available, etc. to certain self righteous
people who are stuck on Microsoft so heavily they refuse to listen to
any alternative, including evidence and logical argument. "smug" for
no reason....*sigh* morons are bloody annoying.

Jason
