It looks like Red Hat has learned a lesson from the Microsoft Playbook.
Get everyone using your product. Get them hooked and dedicated to the
use of the product and then SLAM it to them hard with subscription
pricing. You know what? People will pay it too because they will not
want the cost of a huge server migration to another product. It is
cheaper just to pay the subscription fees and go on. Until the 3 or 5
year plans of these companies are up, they will simply pay for the
licensing to keep it easy on themselves.

This is exactly the point I was trying to make a month ago with the
Windows/Linux controversy.

Of course Red Hat is not going to support using Linux on the Desktop
anymore because it really does nothing for them. They have the market
research that shows that companies are not going to throw away their
Microsoft Workstations in favor of Linux. The truth of the matter is
that most companies won't do it because they cannot buy computers
WITHOUT Windows. GO to Dell and try and buy a workstation machine
without Windows installed, can't do it. Servers yes, workstations no.

Red Hat sees this writing on the wall and in an attempt to coral the
server market is taking a stance that says "Buy our server products,
keep your workstation products." I bet you will even see better
integration with Windows Active Directory with Linux machines and other
such moves in order to solidify this stance.

The truth is that Red Hat has played this brilliantly; they know that
the long term cost of buying software is secondary to making the
software work for the businesses. This moves them into a position to
offer a complete line of server products to businesses. Businesses will
buy it because they are not worried about the relatively low cost of
software.

Love it or hate it, you are going to have to get used to it, I expect
Mandrake to follow suit.
