I think you really ought to give Debian a try. It's got a bad rep for being unfriendly, but I'm going to assume you're not a newbie, and therefore aren't threatened by fdisk. There's a decent install walkthrough available, just google for 'Debian walkthrough'.
Apt is a truly wonderful package management system.
