Another possibility might be to edit the
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethX file and add "ONBOOT='no'".
That way, you can start that adapter or not. "USERCTL='yes'" will allow
a no-root user to start and stop the adapter using the /sbin/ifup
command.

Try turning off dhcp configuration for the interface.
