Title: Re: [MLUG] I want, I want, I want.......

Well, unfortunately it looks like you might have slipped through the cracks. A remedy would have been nice of them to make for you since several of us work on Linux all day and have knowledge of wireless too (I have both). Don’t let your first glance fool you. Things may look very MS, but a dark underbelly of open-source software grows as we speak. Like Dan said, more than you know runs the campus. Email me off-list if you need some help, although configuring should be fine using iwconfig. All you really need to do is set the WEP key and the ESSID.

I am guessing they didn't since they never gave me one and I'm not really sure what that is. but it's no big deal really, but I am a little dissappointed at the lack of support mizzou shows for linux, it was nice last year when they ran redhat in GCB but now that is gone and that's a little upsetting. At least we still have bengal...but that'll prolly be gone within the next couple years and they'll have us sshin into a windows box or something. I don't even know if there's any computers on campus anymore running linux -- it's a little disheartening to say the least, after all I am a computer science student, how am I supposed to learn about my future profession if all they offer is windows boxes!

Hopefully they at least made a remedy ticket.

I talked to 2 ladies at the help desk and to the director, and they asked several other people who were working at computers/roaming around the iats office and no one was able to help. Thank you all for your replies, it will be nice to get wireless internet working on linux so I can use it again now that I'm back here at school.

Do not know who you talked to at IAT Services because we have a whole flock of Linux people.  I myself am just above a newbie.  Several of the people here are IATS employees.  IATS does not support Linux directly for the students.  Will tell you why.  If a student knows enough about running Linux then they will already know more then the average helpdesk person.  Also there are so many distros that if one person knew enough to support all major distros then they would know enough to be an admin.

Good Luck

Subject: Mizzou Wireless Tigernet

does anyone know of anyone in columbia or any shops that can help with setting up linux to access mizzou's tigernet wireless internet? I tried configuring it myself with iwconfig or whatever but when I use the commit command it says error unable to make changes or something like that, and I don't have time with classes to try and figure it out right now. So if you guys know of any companies or anyone who is willing to help set it up (for payment of course) that would be much appreciated. An IATs guy said one of the guys there knew how to do it but when I went there I found out no one there knows the first bit about using linux...appearantly they only hire microsoft and mac junkies and leave us linux users out to dry. I have a feeling my wireless card is  not supported under linux but before I go out and drop $50-100 on a new card I would rather get someone who has more experience than myself to see if they can get it up and running. Thanks
