Substitute 'silly' with 'crappy' and I'll agree. :) It's not bad that
you want to just get your work done.. but you can't come into the whole
Linux thing expecting it to work the way Windows does. They are both
highly different in approaches to solving problems.. and as sad (or
happy.. depending on your opinion) as that may be.. that means that most
Linux developers won't sign NDA's or pay license fees for information
required to write a lot of drivers the quick and easy way.

If you actually complained to HP then I have no problem whatsoever if
you complain in general then. That 5 minutes of effort gives you the
clear in my book. ;)

On existing devices (that you owned before trying Linux) you can't be
blamed obviously.. on new devices you have to make a lil more effort.
One thing I keep bitching at companies to do is to mark Linux support on
packaging. If they DO support it (or for that matter if the community
supports it) then why not add it to the supported OS's list along with
Windows and MacOS?
Mouse, monitor, and keyboard happily DO usually use a standard protocol.
It really irks me that printers, scanners, etc don't.. which causes this
insane driver issue.

No doubt. In the case of hardware support though I really blame hardware
companies more than Microsoft. Their delusion that their communication
specs would give away trade secrets is just stupid.
