Try writing those drivers sometime without specs from HP then tell me
how silly a task you think it is. If companies won't write drivers or
release their specs then hassle them.
To put it in more lay mans terms think of it as being given the task of
writing a manual on how to rebuild classic car engines.. except you're
not actually able to look at any car engines or any of the parts.. you
just have to go on theory of car engines and what you can figure out by
observing the outside of the car.
People still manage to write these drivers but it's a lot of work to do
something fairly simple.. all to support people who won't bother to
complain to the company they purchased their device from.. or better yet
vote with your dollars by purchasing supported devices.
I'm sure the only reason Microsoft even puts up with the current driver
situation is because it keeps people locked into Windows. I'm damn sure
that if they ever felt really threatened for desktop control they'd be
pushing for standardized interfaces. :)
