SuSE is for beginners -- but some people do like it..it has decent security
and it runs like windows -- lot of stuff in the background and you really
don't know what is going on. To me that is annoying cuz I like controlling
everything, but then again that means you a.) you hafta know what you're
doing and b.) you hafta have the time to do it.
Redhat is also good for beginners but you have more control over your system
than with SuSE. I don't have much of an opinion on redhat because it can
really go either way...it's got a rep as being a beginner system but it can
be used by more advanced users. But I hate how they replace all the graphics
with their stupid red hat logos.
Debian is a step up...if you want to learn your system install debian -- but I
have to warn you, if you want to use Debian or Slackware be prepared to learn
a lot! Inevitably if you use either of these distros you will aquire a great
deal of knowledge about computers...but they also require time and work - and
often times you may not get everything working like it's supposed too..that
is until you learn how to manually configure it.
I hate graphics and I don't make them so I can't really share my opinion on
Gimp or Quanta or anything...but I've had a decent amount of experience with
different distros and my personal favorite is slackware...but not all people
care to dedicate enough time or are willing to learn about computers enough
to use that distro...which is shameful.
