[MLUG] problem with duplex printing

A friend is having this problem with a networked printer:

"I am using a2ps as my print program.  The main problem is with printing
in the duplex (2 sides) mode.  What I get is a page in which both sides
are printed, but they are not printed in the same direction (i.e., one
side is upside down while the other is right side up.)  This does not
occur when I print out plaintext files."

So he's getting what is called in Windows 2000 "Print on Short Edge" when
what he wants is "Print on Long Edge."

His second problem is that, "while I have no problem printing text files
or pdf/ps files that I generated with latex, I do have some difficulties
trying to print various pdf files that I get from journals. Any clue as to
what is going on?"

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
