That might be true in theory, but in practice, it makes it harder to
implement some things on mySQL that work just fine elsewhere. So I'm not
sure what the speed logic of not doing subselects was.

That's probably true too, but the point was that everybody was touting
MySQL as the be all and end all, some users were saying "we can't use it
because it doesn't have X", and then the flames would come up...
