Overall they still say they're faster without feature X but they add it
anyway as an option in case you need it (when someone pays to get it
added). With transactions for example you can choose to not use them in
your db and get a nice speed boost. I think part of the process you
decribe is that when they designed MySQL they had far different uses in
mind than what people are trying to use it for now.
