Why not use the mod_php RPM if you're using RedHat?
If you really want the latest version, don't fuss with compiling it
yourself, just use apachetoolbox (www.apachetoolbox.com) and you'll have
apache up and running with mysql and php in a couple of minutes longer than
it takes you to download the sources.
