Its a matter of the network your email server is on. Does it allow a deluge of emails from one source, or does it restrict senders to individual targetting. The tighter spam filters local to the server also help, such as blocking out known addresses, emails with "enlarge your" in the title, etc. The email I use at home has both, the email I use at work seems to have the local filters, but not the global filters.

I like how you put "friends" in quotes, I usually put those "friends" on my filter list, both email and social. Some have redeeming qualities, most don't.
