Evidently I need to RTFM -
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/custom-guide/ch-cu
stom-kernel.html

copy the config from the source configs/ directory (as opposed to /boot)
make; make clean; make bzImage; make modules; make modules_install; make
install

I'll let you know how it goes . . .

Subject: [MLUG] Modifying a stock RedHat kernel

Seriously now - am I doing something wrong or can a stock RedHat kernel
not be modified?

Example - install the kernel and kernel-source rpms from any recent
version of RedHat. make xconfig and load the config file
/boot/config-<kernel>. Save and Exit. make dep; make; make bzImage; make
modules - the last one will fail - WHY?

I hope I'm doing something wrong here . . .
