If you're using devfs, try doing:
ls /dev/sda

It should load the needed modules to show the file.

Also, the reason it isn't asking what USB port it's plugged into is that USB is
a bus architecture, so everything talks at once. It doesn't really care which
plug it's plugged into. It only cares which controller is driving it, which is
often the same for most ports on a computer (PCs that is, Macs often have one
controller per port).
