When you plug your reader in, see if it shows up under /proc:

$ cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

Look for Manufacturer= and Product= lines. If it doesn't show up, maybe your 
usb modules aren't loading:

$ /sbin/lsmod
Module                  Size  Used by    Not tainted
usb-uhci               26188   0 (unused)
usbcore                77024   1 [printer hid usb-uhci]
