With 8 HD's, I would not do anything other than hot swap enabled controllers!
I had already to use this and was very happy to have it.
BTW, I'am using promise SX6000 (six channel) with hotswap cases.
Eventhought verything runs fine , I can not recommend this for linux, because
the software support is very basic (just the HD driver, no notification on
problems).
