Athlon systems are generally much, much cheaper than Xeons, but actually 
finding a vendor that sells and supports large-scale Athlon systems is 
pretty hard.  You mentioned before that you had an existing support 
contract with HP.  They have plenty of big Xeon boxes, but no Athlons. 
They also have some AMAZING Alpha boxes, which would be my 
recommendation over Itanium2.  Unfortunately, SAS won't work on Alpha 
Linux.  It does look like it runs on Tru64 UNIX, though, which is the 
Alpha's 'main' UNIX platform.
