When you say you 'get the signal almost till' you enter your apt building, 
does that mean with the laptop and a PCMCIA card?

Can you see the Memorial Union from a window in your apartment?  If so, a 
high gain antenna may connect you.  If you are on the 'wrong' side, you may 
need a friend on the 'right' side.
