Well, I really appreciate the enthusiasm and generosity that you all are
showing to our beloved library! Unfortunately, I'm basically powerless to
make these kinds of decisions.
If you'd like to donate time/equipment to this project, I'd say that you
should just call the main library number and let them know. They'll direct
you the proper channels, and perhaps something will then come of it. If
there's more than one of you who's interested, maybe you should put
together a letter or something explaining why you'd like wireless access,
your background in this area, and how you'd approach the project. They
like written things.
The main problem I see with this would be support. If the wireless goes
down, who can we go to for immediate support? With the rest of our
network, we have Cisco support, so no matter what happens we have a source
that we can contact to fix it.
Also, like most institutions, the Powers at the library are slightly
mistrusting of Free technology (free means inferior, right?) Hence the
reason we don't have any linux boxes here...
I'll do what I can, but it'd probably be far more fruitful for those of you
interested to just call or drop by the library some time.
