I had a problem once with a Sony memory stick in a Sony Clié device.  It
couldn't access the data at all -- would say the stick wasn't even
inserted.  I eventually managed to recover nearly everything, but I don't
remember how.  I do remember finding a very impressive web page designed
for recovering photos that had been deleted from memory sticks.  Just
looked it up:

I think they had some free stuff there.  I don't remember if I actually
used it though.
