Do we care about beginners? I think Linux is easy enough to use on the
newbie end. I have no desire to make it easy enough that even the lazy and
stupid can run Linux. That's what Windows and even MacOS exist for. There
is no point in trying to be a copy of either of those fine *cough cough*
OS's.
I wish some of these skanky Linux distros would spend less time pleasing
newbies and spend more time pleasing their customers by making the hard
stuff easier to do (not the easier stuff easier). There still is no
universal tool to make configuring systems and services easier. There have
been some stabs at the problem but all of them have sucked. RedHat wastes
it's time on a pretty lil UI while not making it any easier to actually
get things done in that UI.. and they've made more of an effort than most.
Mail is still a pain in the fire breathing arse to do anything but the
basics with. Most distros don't even come with a full complement of
up-to-date developer tools and libraries out of the box.
So let the Windows and MacOS users stay Windows and MacOS users if they
want. It's nothing to me. When the OS is good enough to speak for itself
those people will convert anyway and without the expense of advertising.
The easy stuff that was somewhat hard is now much easier. Now on to making
the hard stuff just somewhat hard. Wanks who can't make an effort aren't
wanted anyway.
