If you take a stab at cleaning it, unless it's an IBM Model M (all other
keyboards are inferior anyway ;) ) use distilled water. Tap water can
leave lime deposits which will further destroy it.
It is most definitely worth investing in a Model M off eBay. I've spilled
coke and milk from cereal right into the board at really bad times, kept
typing, and then cleaned it out later without a problem. The clicky feel
kicks ass, too. Purple Power will take all the grime off the keys and
plastic body if any exists.
