I've noticed tha SWAT can be a pain in the arse sometimes. I had trouble getting it to work on a fresh install of Mandrake when we just asked the installer to automatically set it up on build. Well once the machine was up and running it wouldnt work. So I just took out the old SWAT, backed up our old smb.conf and whatnot, downloaded new RPMS of the newest version and Voila! it worked. Im wondering if this is the same problem he is having.

Hmm, an exploit in Samba, nawww... actually if we all got together to try and and duplicate this and found out it is real and what causes it, it might be bugtraq material. Then again, it might be that Neil doesnt know how to use Windows. In which case Ill kick him in the fruitstand.

I've noticed that SWAT doesn't do as good of a job as I want to be done,
so I usually just make my smb.conf file by hand. Samba installs come with
Using Samba, and you can get the book online easily. It's pretty easy to
make.

When making your smb.conf file, keep in mind the other machines on your
network, controllers, and any needed security (ip range exlusions,
password-protected shares, writable directories, etc.). I think that the
only thing Samba can't do better than a Win NT box is be a secondary
domain controller. You'll need both the smbd and nmbd daemons running if
you want your box to be a controller.

I've also noticed a very weird flaw with Samba that makes it lock up when
I cancel a file copy before it starts with Windows 2000. If I can isolate
it, it might be a potential exploit. Yay for security flaws!
