You may have already done this, but "just in case" did you do a:
smbpasswd -a username
Making sure that "username" is identical on your NIX box and windows
box.

Actually, I took the existence of the smbpasswd file for granted. The
user
name in the smbpasswd file has to match the UNIX user name. If WIndows
has a
different name, you need to translate it via smbusers.
