One thing I forgot: your better ThinkPads come with its devices in 
what they call "media bays", so that if you discover that your old 
TP doesn't have (say) a CD-RW drive in it, you just order that 
rather than re-do the entire notebook.  Dell might offer this, but
I'm not sure.
