The thing on any tape backup system is of course cost. How much would
it cost to replace all your information, how much is what you have on
your computer worth to you. I know personally, that though the hardware
may not be worth much, the stuff such as software, source code, etc. is
worth a LOT to me. So, if you look at cost, consider not only cost of
the hardware, but cost of replacement, and cost of what happens when
things go south. Because things will go South eventually (Believe me,
I'm looking now for a backup solution - getting tired of losing stuff)
Anyway, this is an issue too many places take for granted. Harddrives
are cheap today, as is so much else, but reliability and stability isn't
cheap. Security is much the same as backup systems - we've gotten
complacent because there hasn't been a huge huge risk in the past.
Security lately has become a much hotter issue. Backups however need a
much higher priority than most people give them.
Ask yourself, if your nice new linux server went down, with a harddrive
failure or some such, how much time and energy would it take to restart
the system. Also, you need to ask how long is too long for the system
to come back up. These are just a few of the issues with any backup
system. I could go into more details on backup systems, if people want
me to explain more ramifications and details. I can explain from the
perspective of Oracle, and a 24/7 database system, and backup systems on
such a case.
Ok, I've rambled on enough (all because of 4 hours of sleep b/c stupid
data transfer scripts failed at 1am).
Cheers!
