The AMD Thermal, Mechanical, and Chassis Cooling Design Guide is where I
got that 90 degree C figure, so I was sure about that. Apparently
everything must be stable up to that point, although waking up one day to
a CPU running at 85 degrees C (185 degrees F) and knowing that AMD seems
to think that's okay scares the hell out of me. I remember freaking out
when my K6-2 was running at 47 degrees C. Watching a video of T-Birds
going up in smoke doesn't make me sleep any easier :) Those processors
lacked thermal protection from what I understand.

I did get the CPU temp down 15 degrees C by mounting the case fan in the
rear of the tower below the power supply rather than in the front.
Apparently a front-mounted case fan without a rear one can actually cause
a rise in system and CPU temperatures. This is one of those times where it
pays to RTFM :)

I'm going to talk my dad into coughing up $15 for two 3100 RPM fans, one
with a three pin motherboard connector (back fan) and one with a four pin
power supply connector (front fan). Hopefully that will greatly improve
air circulation and decrease overall temperatures. I need to be sure that
when I go back to Columbia this system absolutely will not burn up. It's
running great now. I just need to keep it cool.\

Word.

Neil
