I had the exact same thing happen.  Turned out the new source (2.4.18)
didn't have ext3 fs journeling turned on in the kernel options, which is
what you are probably formatted as.  Went back and and made sure to
compile with ext3 and my woes went away.   

Now, does anyone know why I can only compile the kernel with SMP??  When
I turn it off, it won't compile.  I only have a simple PII.
