[MLUG] Grub woes

Hey all...

I am playing with a dual boot dual headed RH 7.3 box (sda (8GB) is linux, hdg 
(4GB) (ht366 chipset for ata) is the win2k disk...  I go to recompile the 
kernel (get fresh source, unpack, make xconfig, make dep, make bzImage, make 
modules, make modules_install, cp bzImage to boot as vmlinuz-<kernel version 
here>, edit the grub.conf, reboot) it compiles fine and dandy the kernel 
boots up the machine and gets to the green ok's the first 2 are green then it 
begins to complain that swap is read only and that all other filesystems are 
read only then hurks completely by the time it gets to eth0...  what the heck 
am I doing wrong...  I copy from the examples in grub exactly...  if I change 
the grub.conf .. ro root=/dev...  to rw it hurks big time so that isn't it... 
 
And just for s's and g's I blew the install away and tried lilo and it craps 
out with a LI <newline> LI <newline> LI

suggestions, comments, am I smoking grubs?
