OK, do you have all of your (Postscript) Type 1 fonts in order? Have you
had a look at the "how to get your fonts not to suck in X" document out
there on the web? I'm guessing it has something to do with this.

OK, so if you have a bad default font set-up and straight text is
programmed to be shown at one size smaller than the default and in a
monospaced font, you might be getting something really small if you
have X set up not to default to using Type 1 fonts (Courier in particular)
since it may not be scaling what you have or chooses to scale by a factor
of 2.
