This is called SMTP AUTH.  I have no experience with sendmail whatsoever 
(I'm a qmail guy) but this seems to be the place:

If that seems too weird to install, you could also try what's known as 
POP-before-SMTP, which automatically opens up an IP to relaying for a 
certain amount of time after being authenticated with the POP or IMAP 
daemons.
