I use a Toshiba Sattelite, actually. Hmmm... Are you runnning as root, and if
not, what permissions are set on /dev/dsp?

I haven't really used KDE much, but maybe the aRts sound server does the same
thing as esound, so there may be an aRts output plugin for xmms.

Finally, you might try using mpg123 from the command line (without X running at
all), just for testing, at least.
