Thanks, everyone for the feedback on the 486SX! Seems like the consensus
is try it, what the hell, but don't let it become a quest.
Matt, Re. the UPS: I have a TrippLite unit that's worked very well about
1.5-2 yrs. now. They have software at www.tripplite.com Go to the
"download software" link then "PowerAlert Software" link. The "password"
is tripp10 -- still works from when I got mine. There are packages and
sources (!) Several name/generic UPSes are supported, as well as
Solaris, DEC, AIX, and other versions. The Linux packages are geared
for a RH system. I tried it once on SuSE; had to hunt down and create
several file links it insisted on having. A version 11 is out now;
never tried it, 10 has worked fine the 2 or 3 times the power died on
me. It can be network admin'ed too. For awhile, the download copy of
10.x on the website would not work--it wouldn't install right, I don't
know why. I failed with several copies of it until I found my backup
copy of the one that did work. If you happen to get the bad one, let me
know and I can send a copy that does work.
Try the program statserial if you need to figure out what your UPS is
signaling and how to control it. Even if PowerAlert doesn't support
your UPS, chances are it supports one with the same signals. Finally, a
search for ups on freshmeat turned up a bunch of projects.
Best of luck, thanks all for the help!
Dave
