Unless you're backing up data that is almost all compressed files or
backing up to a device that compresses data itself I'd compress the
backup. This shouldn't result in any lost data but there is no point in
trying to recompress already compressed data.

My perfered backup method is to have a set of removable hdd's that you can
plug in, transfer the days tarballs onto and then remove. Easier to work
with than tape, pretty cheap, and reasonably secure/reliable.
