I don't know about the SX, but I set up a 486DX2-66 w/12mb RAM, VESA-LB video card, 2GB HD, IDE CD-ROM, and a 10mbs NIC with Slackware 7.0. I decided not to setup and GUI. Have Apache w/SSL and MySQL setup on it also. Setup the HD with 3 partitions. 2 partitions set at 1GB with the 3rd setup as a 80mb swap. A little slow, but does the job for me at this point. If you want to setup one as a router/firewall, check out www.freesco.org . Their version will run w/8mb and off a 3.5 floppy. Can be installed onto a hd formated with a dos partition. But one will never know, until one tries.

Subject: [MLUG] 486SX lease on life?
My wife & I (well, me mostly) have become proud owners of our parents'
old 486SX'es (2). I've heard you can make a workable Linux box with a
486DX >= 8 MB. How 'bout the SX? Would I be wasting my time?
Thanks,
Dave
