a while back, I asked a question about changing the mouse cursor in X. If
anyone else was wondering, too, I think I found the answer. xsetroot will
set a cursor (RTFM), and it uses bitmaps apparently made by the program
bitmap. Both come with X, as I understand it. (I haven't actually tested
this, as I just found it and I'm on campus, not home.)
