The $2500 includes the test :)
The annual Foote survery indicates some pretty impressive numbers for SANS/GIAC
certs. Did you complete GSEC? That is valuable to security people.
As for Linux certs - perhaps brainbench? To be honest I don't know anything
about it but I know they exist
Don't worry about the tests - all the knowledge is taught to you there with
real-world "apply this here and now" approach. And they tell you to stay away
from anything graphical that they make :) You will have to know vi though!
Seriously, in my class there was a girl who knew NOTHING about linux and nailed
it with flying colors while there was a UNIX admin with 20+ years experience who
bombed it. It's much more than the knowledge - but being able to think about a
problem and fix it, being able to install and configure a system to specs, and a
small piece on the knowledge with a MC test (very small portion).

I can already tell I'm not ready for the tests. $2500 is a bit much, and if
I'm reading right, thats just the class without the test.
Since I can't get quality, anybody know a cheap certification I can fool an
employer into thinking is worth something? ;-)
