It seems that some of you were unaware that some of the actual administrators
of the new firewall and web filtering systems were actually subscribed to this
mailing list.
I would like to clarify a few issues here:
1. We have perform web filtering. It's a law. Life sucks.
2. Contrary to what some of you may believe, there are plenty of people who try
to look at porno sites off of school computers. You should see the logs
generated by this equipment.
3. Yes, we are filtering everything outside of port 80 and port 443. I
apologize if this makes your life more difficult, however let me point out a
number things. Firstly, school computers are supposed to be utilized for
educational use. I doubt that reading your e-mail through an ssh session falls
in this category. Secondly, we're doing it mostly to block all those WinMX,
Kazaa, Napster programs. You should see the number of machines in the district
where this was going on.
4. Threatening to DDOS servers on Columbia Public Schools network on a public
mailing list to which some of those servers' administrators are subscribed is
less than prudent. I would highly recommend against doing that.
5. We do realize that we cut off some services (such as
kewp.columbia.k12.mo.us). We are working to resolve this.
